“Why do I have to work with him?” Alicia protested.
Blake’s jaw muscle twitched, and he crossed his arms over his chest. This resident, Alicia—he liked her name, not that it mattered in the grand scheme of things—was now beginning to get on his nerves a little. What was the matter with her? It wasn’t like he knew her from Adam. What's with the attitude? he wondered.
For some reason, he couldn’t hold back. “I don’t recall falling over myself to work with you either,” he said.
She shot him an angry look and opened her mouth to speak, but Dr. Hartwood halted their protests with a wave of her hand. “Alicia, are you aware the hospital would award ten thousand dollars to the best two presenters for the day?”
Blake watched with fascination at the speed at which Alicia’s kissable lips clamped shut—it seemed money was a big deal for her. Wait. Why was he thinking about her lips? Focus, Blake, he thought.

Money aside, this is also a great opportunity to gain exposure and network with some of the best minds in the field who we’ve invited from other institutions for the symposium.”
Blake watched Alicia push her chin upward. I guess she wants the full cash award, he thought, which meant he was in for a co-presentation.
Dr. Hartwood turned to Blake as she began twirling the pen again. “Blake, just so you know, your father insisted you join this presentation. ‘For visibility’, he said.”
Aha! So this would serve as the platform for his official introduction to the hospital leadership. Interesting.
Alicia stiffened. “What do you mean, his father?”
Time for the big reveal. He wondered how she’d react.
Dr. Hartwood stopped spinning her pen. “Don’t you know who Blake is? I’m sure you must have crossed paths during the residency interviews.”
Blake couldn’t recall ever seeing her before today’s round. He’d have noticed her spitfire personality immediately.
Alicia looked back and forth between Blake and the professor. “I don’t understand,” she said.
“His father is..."
